Birkhoff’s Bagel

In ancient Greece, it was believed the Ouroboros was the first creature created in the universe. Immortal and eternal.

The snake eating its tail.

No eyes. No ears. No organs. No lungs. No stomach. No hands. No feet. Never moving.

“He was created thus, his own waste providing his own food, and all that he did or suffered taking place in and by himself.” -Plato

A few thousand years later, Birkhoff finds the Ouroboros in a Strange Attractor:

An attracting set that has zero measure in the embedding phase space and has fractal dimension. Trajectories within a strange attractor appear to skip around randomly and eat themselves.

Mapping the movement of a drop of vanilla in a piece of taffy as it is pulled and stretched in a three dimensional phase space, you’ll find the shape of The Ouroboros staring back at you.

The shape of the strange attractor is named after an anti-Semitic mathematician from the 40s. And a bagel.

Ouroboros: Lord of Disorder, Chaos through the Beginning and End of Time. And Bagels. Keep eating those emotions, Ouroboros.
